Recently, Brazil’s capital Brasilia and Sao Paulo have launched the 5th Generation Mobile Communication Technology (5G) networks, becoming the first cities in Brazil with 5G network services. The Brazilian government has introduced policies to accelerate 5G technology promotion. A series of 5G technology applications such as autopilot, Internet of Things, telemedicine, intelligent manufacturing, smart agriculture and smart city are becoming realities, providing new impetus for Brazil’s economic development in the future.

Equipped with high-definition cameras, multi-spectral sensors, solar panels and large-capacity batteries, it can monitor the growth of crops around the clock... At the 27th Agrishow held not long ago in Brazil, a Brazilian intelligent agricultural service enterprise showed an agricultural robot based on 5G technology. Thanks to 5G technology, a large amount of data obtained by robots can be uploaded to AI platforms immediately, and cross-referenced with database information to help farmers make science-based and accurate decisions. It is reported that each robot can monitor 14 million crops every week for 200 hectares of cultivated land, greatly reducing the input of labor, material resources and financial resources in the process of crop growth.

“5G technology will bring revolutionary changes to Brazil’s economy and society,” said Moises Moreira, Deputy Director of the Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel). With the technical advantages of high speed, large capacity and low delay, 5G technology can not only help enterprises improve production efficiency, but also give birth to more new business models, formats and new industries. According to Eduardo Nagel, Chairman of the Brazilian Association of Internet and Telecommunications Providers, the promotion of 5G technology has provided more possibilities for the development of small, medium and micro enterprises and entrepreneurs, and is expected to further improve the business environment in Brazil.

To this end, the Brazilian government has accelerated the construction and deployment of 5G. In September 2021, the Board of Anatel held a special meeting to adopt the final version of the decree on 5G. In November of the same year, Anatel held an auction of 5G band operating licenses. Three Brazilian telecom operators won the bid, with operating rights of 20 years. According to Anatel, after Brasilia and Sao Paulo, other major cities in Brazil will start 5G networks one after another. Brazil’s National Industry Confederation (CNI) estimates that by 2030, the coverage of Brazil’s 5G networks will reach 81%.

The construction of 5G networks has directly stimulated the consumption of mobile phones. According to statistics, from January to May this year, the sales of 5G smartphones in Brazil exceeded 1.8 million units, an increase of 230% year on year. The increase in market supply has also made 5G smartphones more affordable. In May this year, the average retail price of 5G smartphones in Brazil dropped by 30% year on year.

A study by the Brazilian Ministry of Economy shows that in the next 10 years, the demand for 5G in Brazil’s economy will bring to relevant enterprises BRL 101 billion (1 BRL ≈ 1.3 CNY). Meanwhile, the potential benefits brought by 5G technology to the Brazilian economy can reach BRL 590 billion.
